In the Spring, 2017, the St. James Town Community Co-op started its first community garden, the SJTCC Garden. Located in the heart of St. James Town, this community garden was built by local-residents who are passionate about increasing community access to sustainable, organic, local, healthy food.
The SJTCC Garden is focused on growing a large variety of fresh herbs and vegetables, and in our first season we have planted tomatoes, peppers, cabbage, squash, beets, kale, basil, licorice mint, peppermint, thyme, nasturtium, and marigolds.
We partnered with a local summer camp to facilitate garden tours and workshops with local children, teaching them about organic gardening, flower-vegetable companion planting, growing plants, and identifying herbs. We’re committed to educating youth in St. James Town on the environmental benefits of eating local and healthy produce.
The SJTCC garden is an initial part of a larger project, OASIS – a community-based enterprise focused on food sovereignty, the promotion of health and the overall well-being of the community.
Upcoming Goals for 2018:
Continue developing the existing composting project, initiated with the support of local coffee shops who have donated recycled coffee grinds
Continue working with local-residents and planting produce reflective of our culturally diverse community
Support the OASIS project feasibility study, in identifying the SJTCC garden’s growth capacity for the future OASIS community-kitchen
Continue partnering with local children and youth programs for garden tours/ educational programming
